Indigenous Student Bursary

Amount:

$1000-$3500 (The specific amount awarded is determined by your school)

Eligibility:

  • Must be attending:
  • In an approved post-secondary academic program (ex. A degree or diploma program) or training program (ex. An apprenticeship)
    • A person “who report(s) being an Aboriginal person, that is, First Nations, Métis or Inuk (Inuit).”
  • Meet the citizenship and Ontario residency requirements outlined on the OSAP application for Full-Time Students
  • Demonstrate financial need based on criteria set by your school
  • Meet any other eligibility requirements set by your school (for example, some school require students to be in full-time studies to be eligible for this bursary)

Applying to this bursary does not also require that you apply for OSAP for Full-Time Students or OSAP for Part-Time Students.
Must complete your school’s specific Indigenous Student Bursary Application.

Ontario Indigenous Travel Grant

Covers travelling expenses incurred for students travelling between their remote First Nations Community and their postsecondary school.

    • Air Travel: $1300 per trip up to a maximum of four one-way trips (= max of $5200) per academic year
    • Travel by Private Vehicle: $0.41 per kilometer travelled
    • Other Travel Methods (ex. Train, bus, boat, taxi, ride-hailing services): $75 for each trip up to a maximum of four one-way trips (= max of $300) per academic year)
  • If your spouse and/or dependent children are relocating with you during your studies:
    • Air Travel: $1300 per trip up to a maximum of two one-way trips per person (which equals a max of $2600 in total per person) per academic year)
    • Travel by Private Vehicle: $0.41 per kilometer travelled
    • Other Travel Methods (ex. Train, bus, boat, taxi, ride-hailing services): $75 each trip up to a maximum of two one-way trips per person (which equals a maximum of $150 in total per person) per academic year)

Eligibility:

  • Applied for OSAP for Full-Time Students, have met all of the eligibility requirements and have a calculated provincial financial need of at least $1
  • Self-identified as Indigenous on your OSAP profile
  • Enrolled in public or private postsecondary school in Ontario or a public postsecondary school in Canada that is approved for OSAP purposes
  • Live in a remote First Nations community when not in full-time postsecondary studies:
    • Communities defined as Zone 3 or Zone 4 by Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) may be considered a remote First Nations community
    • First-Nations communities that are remote and/or fly-in but not designated as Zones 3 or 4 may still qualify- contact your school’s financial aid office to determine whether your community’s location meets the eligibility criteria

Non-repayable financial assistance for First Nations students enrolled in eligible post-secondary programs.

Amount:

  • Up to a maximum of $53,000 per year for full-time students except in extraordinary and justified circumstances, students in an advanced or professional degree program or a masters or doctoral program can receive up to a maximum of $90,000 (determined on a case-by-case basis)
  • May include about aren’t limited to:
    • tuition and other student fees
    • initial professional certification and examination fees
    • books and supplies required by the student for their program of study
    • official transcript fees
    • application fees
    • living expenses, including for dependents if applicable
    • expenses associated with travel home, including for dependents if applicable
    • supplemental tutorial, guidance and counseling services
    • childcare, as needed
    • scholarship and incentive payments
  • students can’t receive retroactive funding for the studies in a previous fiscal or academic year

Eligible recipients:

Eligible recipients (This is who administers the PSSSP and distributes its funds and they must create publicly available information about protocols surrounding selection priority criteria, deferring applications when there are more eligible students than funds available, and their appeal process):

  • Band councils of recognized First Nations bands
  • Organizations designated by band councils:
    • Bands or settlements
    • Tribal councils
    • Education organizations
    • Political or treaty organizations engaged by or on behalf of First Nations
  • Self-governing First Nations in Yukon that don’t yet have responsibility for post-secondary education through a programs and services transfer agreement or through the terms of their self-government agreement
  • Funding agreement managers and recipient appointed advisors that ISC has entered into a funding agreement with in order to administer PSSSP program funds with or on behalf of a First Nations Community
    • If no such agreement exists, the regional office of the province or territory where the student resides is responsible for reviewing and assessing student applications for funding

  • Must be status First Nations (registered Indians)
  • Must maintain satisfactory academic standing (determined by the ‘eligible recipient’ in the above section) at an eligible post-secondary institution
    • Includes: CEGEP, community college, undergraduate studies, advanced professional studies, post-graduate studies at eligible colleges and universities in Canada and abroad, and First Nations designated and directed institutions

University and College Entrance Preparation Program (UCEPP)

  • Full-time postsecondary students ages 21-24 years old who left the care of a children’s aid society or Indigenous child well-being society at age 18
  • Must have received financial or other transitional support where they were 18-20 years old from an Ontario Children’s Aid Society or Indigenous child well-being society through the Continued Care and Support for Youth program OR would have been eligible to receive this support when they were 18-20 years old
  • Individuals who are or will be eligible to receive continued care and support but decline it may also be eligible
  • Individuals 18-24 years old at the start of their study period who were in Extended Society Care with an Ontario Children’s Aid Society and were adopted on or after August 1, 2013, may also be eligible
    • Must contact the financial aid office at your postsecondary intuition for eligibility details

Application:

  • Must submit an OSAP application for Full-Time Students
  • Non-adopted eligible youth 21-24 years old are automatically considered for this grant when they submit an OSAP application for full-time students
    • They will be notified that they must submit a Verification of Status with Children’s Aid Society Form unless they already did so in a previous study period
  • Youth Adopted on or after August 1, 2013, or youth 18-20 years old and declining CCSY must submit additional materials

Receiving the grant:

A cheque will be given to the student in two equal installments: one approximately 4-6 weeks after their review is submitted and supporting documentation is provided, and a second installment half-way through the study period (does not require the student to submit a second review to receive it).

Ontario First Generation Bursary

For post-secondary students with financial need whose parents have never attended post-secondary studies.

Does not require you to apply for either OSAP for Full-Time Students or OSAP for Part-Time students.

$1000-$3500 (determined by your school)

  • Attending a publicly assisted college or university in Ontario
  • Your parents have never participated in post-secondary studies anywhere in the world
  • Enrolled in a first-entry under-graduate program

Métis Post-Secondary Education Support Program

Métis Nation of Ontario offers financial support.

Amount:

The amount of financial aid awarded is determined based on demonstrated need such as having children or a disability, the type of program, the number of other eligible candidates, and the student’s course load

Eligibility:

  • Must be a Métis student attending or accepted into an accredited post-secondary program at a recognized Canadian University or College
  • Must be a MNO citizen or have a letter of eligibility from the MNO Registry
  • Must reside in Canada

Application:

  • Apply via your school’s Ontario First Generation Bursary application
  • Include any supporting documents that your school requires

Deadline:

Apply in May for Spring/Summer, Fall, and Winter semesters

Receiving the Bursary:

Award paid in two installments at the beginning and end of a given semester. Awards at the end of a semester are provided after the student provides grades and answers a short questionnaire.
